MOLINE, Illinois-A special kind of second hand store is giving homeless animals a second chance. It's called "Rescued", and money made at the thrift shop in Moline goes to help rescue dogs and cats.

"Every bit of it, every dime available", said co-owner Kris Westmoreland. She says after the rent and lights and bills are paid, the non-profit is all about the pets.

Annika Whiting donated a barely worn Cardinals jersey, some cat supplies, and shoes to the store on 16th Street, and she's donated before.

"It's a very good cause, helping out the community, helping out the animals", Whiting said.

The store was born after Westmoreland and longtime co-worker Erin Granet decided to take a leap of faith and merge their passion of animals.

"She gave up her job, I was retired and bored", said Westmoreland.

In the past six months since opening, an estimated $8,000 has been given to area shelters, and veterinarians to pay bills for emergency surgeries on rescued animals.

"It's sort of become a niche", Westmoreland said.

Recently the store helped a woman who was waiting on a late Social Security check to pay for badly needed surgery for her cat. "Rescued", came to her rescue.

Rescued has helped pay for a leg amputation, tail amputation, and some badly needed teeth cleanings, as well as donations to area shelters. All by selling gently used donated goods, from furniture to books to knicknacks  and jewelry.

"It's really heartwarming to see all the animal lovers who support our mission",  said Westmoreland.

Rescued is located at 2105 16th Street in Moline.
