Fulton, Illinois, is finding a way to grow its population by attracting prison employees to live there.

And, the town of about 3,500 residents is ready for more.

Mike Chizmar represents progress in Fulton.

He's wrapping up work on the house at 822 Fowler Road.

It's nearly ready to welcome a new owner at an upcoming Open House.

"We're excited about that because it's four homes that are going to be very attractive to a lot of buyers in the market," said Karrie Kenney, a real estate lender at Central Bank.

The Open House takes place from 1-2:30 p.m., on Sunday, March 13.

Festivities will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1603 7th St. in Fulton.

Economic Growth Corporation (GROWTH) joined forces with Fulton on the rehab projects.

The city received $250,000 for the revitalization.

It's like investing in the future.

"The houses needed some upgrades," said Mayor Larry Russell.  "This is a great way to do it.  And now, we'll be able to get those prison employees here."

The project's next phase reaches out to employees at Thomson Prison.

It offers incentive packages worth nearly $3,400 for down payment and closing costs.

"Any of these families that would like to live in Fulton, this is going to give them that opportunity," said Kenney.

While the project helps to recruit residents who work at the prison, it's also bringing new life into Fulton neighborhoods.

These homes just weren't selling as-is.

But with renovations, they're priced to sell between $95,000-$140,000.

"It's all very positive when you have new ideas, new people and new money," Mayor Russell said.

Call it progress at reasonable prices.

This community is ready to grow.

"Whether you're a single mom or family, I think they're very quality homes that are going to bring some families to Fulton that may not have moved there before," Kenney concluded.

In this town, the Welcome Mat is out.

Homes for sale include: 1603 7th Street, 822 Fowler Road, 1220 13th Avenue and 822 9th Avenue in Fulton.
