GENESEO, Illinois — The Geneseo Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam. Callers claim to be with the police department or the IRS and say the resident must pay money owed or they will be arrested.

One resident told police that the caller ID said the caller was from the Geneseo Police Department.

The Geneseo Police Department said Wednesday that the department will never ask anyone to pay money owed over the phone, or threaten with an arrest warrant if an amount goes unpaid. Police urge residents who receive a call like this to hang up and report it to local law enforcement.

If you have any questions, or have received a scam call like this claiming to be from Geneseo or the IRS, call the Geneseo Police Department at 309-944-5141.
