TIFFIN, Iowa (AP) — The city of Tiffin will soon vote on a $9 an hour minimum wage ordinance, a change from the original tiered-wage ordinance.

Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the Tiffin City Council has spent weeks debating a tiered wage ordinance that would keep the minimum wage for workers under 18 years old at $7.25 while allowing wages for adults to rise in accordance with Johnson County’s minimum wage ordinance. The council voted down that ordinance Feb. 16 after receiving criticism from the public.

The $9 rate was chosen as a compromise between $8.75, which the Iowa Senate has proposed for the past two years, and $9.15, Johnson County’s upcoming increase.

The ordinance will require three readings to pass beginning March 8.
