DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 50-year-old man has been given life in prison for stabbing to death a Davenport woman.

Gary Fortune was sentenced earlier this month in Scott County District Court. He’d been convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of Betty Simmons and an attack on her husband, Jack Simmons, in September 2014. Prosecutors say Fortune broke into the Simmonses’ Davenport apartment and stabbed them. Their daughter was Fortune’s fiancée.

Fortune also was convicted of attempted murder, burglary and arson. He was sentenced to a total of 75 years in prison for those crimes.

Fortune was at large for about 24 hours before he was captured at a bar in Reynolds, Illinois.
