Students at Black Hawk College will need more money in the fall. Tuition will go up again for the second year in a row.

Black Hawk College has already seen hard times, from staff reductions, to cuts in their athletic programs.

However, those cuts are still not enough. Thursday, the board approved a tuition hike. It will be increased by $12, which means $147 per credit hour. For a normal full-time student, that adds up to be $180 per semester.

"It was our intention at Black Hawk College not to raise tuition rates at all this year. We would have been able to keep that promise had it not been for the current issue with the state budget and the impasse," said Black Hawk College's president, Bettie Truitt.

Truitt says the college has seen a decline in enrollment and was expecting to get $2.7 million from the state.

"It's extremely short-sighted on the part of politicians in Illinois that they can't come to some agreement to fund education. In my mind that's a no brainer, if you want to look at the future of your communities in the state of Illinois, its education," said Truitt.
