Davenport doctor fined $10,000 for prescribing medication to strangers online

A Davenport doctor settled with a $10,000 fine for prescribing medicine to strangers online.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa doctor accused of prescribing medication to strangers online has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine.

The Iowa Board of Medicine released documents Wednesday that indicate 44-year-old Paul Bolger was issued a citation and ordered to pay the civil penalty in a Feb. 5 settlement.

The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/1SJ0qs0 ) reports Bolger, who practices in Davenport, admitted he prescribed pain medication online to unfamiliar patients during a CBS News investigation

The board says Bolger prescribed medication based solely on an internet request without establishing a relationship with the patient or reviewing medical history.

Bolger denies breaking any laws but agreed to settle the case to avoid expensive litigation.

Bolger may not participate in telemedicine until he can prove he can do it in a safe manner.
