The Galesburg's wrestling community honored one of its own. They're using the loss of a coach to spread awareness about heart disease.
Inside Galesburg High School's gym the color red sticks out, in the stands and even the wrestler's uniforms. The color stands for heart disease.
John Chapman coached wrestling at Galesburg for 15 years and was an all American wrestler himself.
"You would think that he was, you know for the most part a picture of health," said his wife Jody.
Almost six years ago, John and Jody were running the Bix, with only a few miles left of the race, John died from a heart attack. John's parents say it could have been prevented. They're now making it their mission to educate people.
"We want them to get a stress test and we want them to get their cholesterol checked. If my son would have had either one of those he`d be with us today," said Rosemary Chapman.
So far the Chapman's have raised $45,000 for the John Chapman Heart Fund at Genesis Cardiac Institute. Their biggest donor has been the wrestling team, holding a red out charity event for the past three years.
"Everyone spoke about how great of a man he was, not just a coach but a person, an individual and a dad," said Sean Masten, Galesburg's wrestling coach.
The money raised for the John Chapman Heart Fund helps pay for people to have stress and cholesterol tests done.
