It  has been two-and-a-half years since the Henry County Humane Society in Geneseo, Illinois started construction on its new shelter, but fast forward to today and they're still not moved in. They're asking for the community's help to get the project finished.

While the shell of the building is done, the inside is not. The shelter ran out of money to finish the project.

"The big donor who donated the building and concrete said I will donate that money if you start this spring," said Karen Russell, president of the Henry County Humane Society.

That was two-and-a-half years ago. Since breaking ground, they've done all the work they can, relying on donations. The shelter's short $300,000, a big amount they say is worth it, especially when you take a look at their current shelter.

"We do the best we can with the space that we have you know. We pride ourselves on making sure its clean, the animals are as healthy as possible, but it will make such a huge difference over there," said shelter manager, Tracy Diehl.

The new shelter is about double in size, not only would they have more room, but they'll be able to take more animals in, "Because we're such a small space you wouldn't believe how many I have to turn away," said Diehl.

They'll also be able to keep sick animals segregated from the healthy ones.

"It's almost like giving back to them a little bit, that they're not in this tired little space you know it's served it purpose but we have outgrown it," said Diehl.

Anyone wanting to donate can mail a check to Henry County Humane Society at 14606 Ross Hill Road, Geneseo, IL 61254
