The big project to fix Harrison Street ended a few weeks early in Davenport.

That could be just in time for businesses, which are trying to rebound after a rough four months.

The familiar sizzle nearly turned to fizzle at Rock's Anchor Grill.

"If this didn't change much like it did, we'd be gone," said owner Rock Eddleman.

The seven year old diner, 1526 N. Harrison Street, had to cut its staff in half while bracing for the worst.

"This place would be closed," Eddleman said.

But traffic is whizzing by Monday on Harrison Street once again.

The nearly $2 million project wrapped up just in time for most businesses in the Hilltop Campus Village.

"It allows businesses to ramp up for that holiday rush that's coming," said Scott Tunnicliff, program director.

Winnie's Wishes Resale Shop opened just before street construction started in August.

Its customer count was sliced nearly in two.

"There will be a lot more people coming up and down the street to actually see, oh yeah, they're still here," said store volunteer Andrea Martin.

At Jimmy's King Gyros, owner Nicole Randall is getting ready to reopen.

"It's been a very difficult four months," she said.

Construction totally blocked the restaurant at 1008 N. Harrison Street.

Randall received financial incentives from the city to get by.

But reopening to customers on Monday, December 14, will be special.

"This is a family restaurant," she said.  "We really get close and personal with a lot of our customers."

She says the long wait will be worth it when diners return.

"To see them again, and to know that they're doing okay," she continued.  "To know that we're here, and we're back."

Fortunately, no fizzle at popular Rock's Anchor Grill.

"It feels great," Eddleman said.

Once Harrison Street reopened on Saturday, the customers also returned.

"Business is coming back up again," he concluded.  "Hope it gets better."

Better for crucial December sales in the Hilltop Campus Village.
