Local gun shop owners say new gun owners on the rise

However, in the Quad Cities, gun sales are flat. Instead, gun store owners say they’re seeing a change in the kind of customer who is buying guns.

Nationwide, gun sales are soaring - even breaking a record in some cases.

According to the FBI, more American had their background checked purchasing guns on Black Friday than any day on record. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System processed 185,345 requests on November 27th, 2015, which is a 5% increase over Black Friday 2014.

However, in the Quad Cities, gun sales are flat. Instead, gun store owners say they're seeing a change in the kind of customer who is buying guns.

"We have a lot of new customers coming through the door," said Kimberly Smithe, Owner of G&G Retailers, Inc. in Davenport. "There's potential customers coming in here that had never thought about having a firearm in their home who are now more concerned and they have a lot more questions."

Analysts said the main driver of gun sales is fear of everyday violence, including mass shootings. Smithe agreed - saying mass shootings and the latest terrorist attack have people on edge.

Jerry Patterson, a customer of G&G Retailers, Inc., said it's not just one kind of fear - but two kinds.

"You either fear that you're going to lose the right to have weapons... or just the fear of maybe I need a weapon because it's getting a little more violent out there," he explained.

Smithe said she's also noticed another trend - a rise in interest for concealed carry classes. However, she cautioned that purchases and classes take time and customers have to meet a strict set of requirements.

"You can't just walk in here and  think you're going to buy a handgun today, because that's not going to happen," she explained. "It's three generations and I want everybody coming in here to feel comfortable, feel safe, and when they leave here I want them to have the knowledge that they need."

Despite all the gun shopping this year, the latest General Social Survey shows the number of American households with guns is the lowest it's ever been. Still, in 2015, the FBI is reporting a record number of background checks month after month.
