A K9 officer with the Muscatine Police Department in Iowa now has an extra layer of protection- a bullet and stab protective vest.

Nero, the four-legged officer, was the recipient of the vest.  He has been with the Muscatine Police Department since 2014.  He and Officer Minnat Patel attended the Dual-Purpose Narcotic Detector Dog training class. Nero was trained in detecting different illegal drugs, tracking suspects, and apprehending suspects.  After the training was complete, Nero started working patrol with Officer Patel in October of 2014.

The department was able to purchase the vest thanks to a donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., which is a charity out of Massachusetts.  Vested Interest provides vests and other assistance to K9 officers all over the country.

Nero’s vest is embroidered with the statement “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.”
