One man is dead after a fire in an apartment in Davenport, Iowa.

Davenport fire crews were called to a structure fire around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2015, that started in a second floor apartment at 2617 N. Clark Street in Davenport. The building is a multi-family residence near Peterson Park.

Reports say neighbors were the ones who smelled the smoke and were banging on the door of the apartment where the fire started, with no response. They were the ones who called the Davenport Fire Department.

The Davenport Fire Department said the fire likely started in the living room and that the man's death is linked to the fire. They have not yet released the identity of that man but they confirm he had a working fire alarm that was going off during the blaze.

Fire crews found heavy smoke in the second floor hallway when they arrived. They forced their way inside the apartment where the fire had started and quickly extinguished the flames, but the fire chief said the person inside that apartment did die.

"The residents have been allowed back in the building on the third floor and on the basement. We are keeping the second floor clear until the investigation is complete," said Lynn Washburn, the Davenport Fire Chief.

Red Cross was called to the scene to assist other residents. The Davenport Fire Department does not yet know what caused the fire.
