The future of J.B Young School in Davenport, Iowa was up to a vote by the School Board Monday evening, October 26, 2015.
Depending on how they vote, the School Board could decide to either keep the school up and running, or turn it into a community center.
Superintendent, Dr. Art Tate, recommended that the school should close because it has a low enrollment, and is costing too much to maintain. Currently, the school is only at 57% capacity, and J.B. Young is the most expensive school in the district to run.
On the other hand, many community members say they don’t want to see the school close down. Two open meetings were held in October to allow parents and area residents to speak their minds.
It is estimated that Davenport Schools could save about $2 million by closing the school. According to the resolution by Davenport Community Schools, should the Board choose to close it, JB Young would close after the 2015-2016 school year.
