Taking a trip back to the 1920s, some history buffs, who happen to love football, planned to put on a 9 on 9 flag football game in Rock Island, Illinois.

Teams set to hit the field Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Douglas Park were going to wear replica jerseys, replica leather helmets and used a 1920s- style melon football, according to a statement from organizer Simon Herrera.

Herrara, along with Chris Zimmerman were the organizers of the old-school game. Their goal was to let people know about football history at Douglas Park and bring attention to the local football history of the Quad Cities area.

Football activity in the QC dates back to the early 1900s.  The two teams, the Rock Island Independents and the Moline Universal Tractors, were revived from the 1920s to play each other Sunday.

Kickoff was set for 2 p.m. The event is free and all were welcome to watch the game.

Happy Joe's Pizza and Bent River Brewing Company will be there and the Mississippi Valley Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America planned to display several cars from the era.
