It's a simple sign with a profound message.

"They are open for business," said customer Lori McMillin, Port Byron.

Customers like Lori return to Anchor Lumber in Silvis just hours after a devastating fire.

"It was thrilling to have our first guy come in and buy a sheet of plywood," said Operations Manager Rick Van Oteghem.

And amazing to have 65 employees back at work on Tuesday.

"It's a little chaotic this morning," said Delivery Manager John Michaletti.

Almost business as usual as he fills orders for local contractors.

"We have deliveries that have to go out," he said.

While there's smoke and water damage in part of the store, a firewall prevented significant losses in Anchor's main building.

The worst damage wiped out a lawn and garden area, along with a cabinet section.

Still, it doesn't take long for customers to find what they want.

"I was shocked to be able to get what I needed here today," said Jim Andon, Silvis.

McMillin was even bringing in lunch for the Anchor crew to enjoy.

"From the littlest thing that you need to the biggest, they have answers to every one of your questions," she said.

The Silvis store dates back to 1962, and it's very important to the local economy.

"We call ourselves the hometown lumber yard," Van Oteghem said.

Anchor Hardware is living up to that image in challenging times.

Just like their shirts featuring a cartoon-like character, these are real superheroes.

"We really pride ourselves in our relationships with our customers," Van Oteghem said.  "They're our friends, and they'll be here long after this is all forgotten."

While the store sorts out damage and renovations, it will continue with a free customer and community cookout.

The event will take place on Friday, August 7, from 11-2, at the store's 1505 1st Avenue location in Silvis.

"That's what we're looking forward to, the future," he concluded.
