Same sex marriage decision sparks strong reactions

They're ready for a rally at Davenport's Metropolitan Community Church.

An Equality Rally takes places at 6:30 p.m., Friday, at 2930 West Locust Street in Davenport.

"The power of love always wins out," said Rev. Rich Hendricks, who serves as pastor at the church.

Emotions and excitement Friday for Pastor Hendricks and his husband, Jeff Transou.

"And today, the power of love was recognized by the United States Supreme Court," Rev. Hendricks said.

A ruling so memorable that they're displaying it inside the church.

It represents a long struggle for marriage equality across the country.

"A lot of people fought for years to get to this point," Transou said.

While nearly two-thirds of Americans support same sex marriages, there's opposition to the decision.

Bishops from the Iowa Catholic Conference write, "To make something legal does not mean that it is true or good."

"This has not solved anything," added Pastor Mark Eddy, Zion Lutheran Church in Taylor Ridge.

The church is joining other Missouri Synod congregations to reject same sex marriage.

It's reaffirming marriage as being between a man and woman.

"We don't believe that a government has a right to change what marriage is because marriage was defined by God," Pastor Eddy said.

Pastor Eddy thinks that the Supreme Court decision will actually spark more challenges, much like past abortion rulings.

"As Americans, we believe from our Declaration of Independence that rights are given by God," he continued.  "And if God does not give a right to something, then it's not a right."

Back at the Metropolitan congregation, dissension won't detract from this decision.

"I was ecstatic," Transou said.  "It was wonderful."

Rev. Hendricks says he looks forward to the day when people won't be "put into boxes."

"We'll just recognize people as people because we're one human family," he concluded.

It will be a victory theme fit for Friday's celebration in Davenport.
