Severe storm destroys Menominee Fire Station

Damage to the station and trucks will likely run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Volunteer firefighters know about handing emergency calls in Menominee, Illinois.

But after straight-line winds toppled the village's fire station on Monday morning, June 22, they must deal with their own problems.

Nobody was injured when the fire station's roof collapsed on three trucks.

"It was hard to believe that just the wind did this," said Fire Trustee Nick Tranel.  "But after looking at it and understanding what happened, wind blew the doors in."

The village of about 250 residents is located in Jo Daviess County,  between East Dubuque and Galena.

The fast-moving storm also snapped trees in two around 10 a.m. Monday.  It scattered some debris into nearby farms while racing through the region.

"It got a hold of the roof, picked it up and set it back down," Fire Trustee Jerry Meyer.

Heavy equipment arrived Monday afternoon to begin cleaning-up at the two-decade old station.

"We've got a couple of cranes coming," Meyer said.  "They're going to lift the roof up, and then we're going to pull the trucks out."

Damage to the station and trucks will likely run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Insurance should cover most of the cost although the village will need to raise some money.

Residents say this is the worst storm to plow through here in recent memory.

Thankfully, isolated damage will allow this close-knit community to step up and get to work.

"Everybody wants to jump in and help," Tranel said.  "Right now, we're just trying to keep everybody away from it and the danger."

Menominee-Dunleith operates two additional stations that did not get any damage.
