The Rock Island County Health Department has identified a mosquito that tested positively for West Nile Virus.

"It's nothing to be alarmed about now, but it does show that the virus is circulating and as time goes on, we'll have more positive tests probably," said Paul Guse of the Rock Island County Health Department.

The recent rain will likely increase the amount of mosquitoes in the area. Most will be flood water mosquitoes that come out in bunches and don't carry the West Nile Virus, but those that do like small pockets of standing water.

"It could be gutters that are clogged up. It could be bird baths or a little kid's swimming pool," said Guse.

Guse suggests using DEET and making sure window screens are properly installed.

The Rock Island County Health Department would also like people who find dead birds to notify them as they are a potential sign of the West Nile Virus.
