Nearly three dozen superintendents from across Illinois were headed to Springfield to fight for equitable school funding.
East Moline superintendent Kristin Humphries, Silvis' Ray Bergles, and Galesburg's Bart Arthur were all scheduled to attend the Illinois State Board of Education meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2015.
The group represents the Funding Illinois' Future coalition, which is working to improve funding equity. Leaders believe Illinois' current funding school formula is unfair because it penalizes districts that serve a higher number of low-income families.
Illinois ranks 50th in the U.S. for the state's share of education funding. Only 28 percent of dollars spent on education come from the state, while the national average is closer to 50 percent.
Humphries was expected to be one of six speakers at Thursday's meeting.
The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. in Springfield.
