Western Illinois University wants to build the relationship between students and law enforcement.

"The current issue right now is our diversity in our police agencies and how we interact in respect to our communities," said Scott Harris, WIU's director of public safety.

On Tuesday night, consultants from WSM Trainers were brought in to hold a discussion about race and law enforcement.

"They get a chance to interact and see what type of training that the police go through," said Harris.

They discussed topics like racial diversity challenges on campus, the responsibility of law enforcement and lessons learned from tragic endings.

Harris says a proactive approach is needed, "There are certainly best practices and that's what we're trying to do by this is to be transparent to work with our community, get a chance to open that dialogue, talk about those difficult conversations before something happens," said Harris.
