March 20 is the International Day of Happiness, a day centered around connecting with others and pulling yourself away from isolation.

To participate in the joyous day, people are being asked to participate either in person or online. In person, there are groups planning to gather in public places to connect with others. Online participation consists of sharing inspiring or happy messages using the hashtag #InternationalDayofHappiness.

There is also a website encouraging people to engage in #HappyActs by presenting the #HappyActs Challenge.

“We challenge you to do and share as many #HappyActs as you can by the International Day of Happiness on March 20,” reads the top of the web page.

These actions include things “that make someone’s day a little brighter.”

Those who take the challenge were asked to share their #HappyAct online using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or other social media platforms.

The International Day of Happiness was resolved by the United Nations and 2015 is the third year it will be recognized. All 193 UN members have agreed to make happiness among the nations a higher priority, according to the Day of Happiness’ website.

“More than ever before, Happiness is a socioeconomic goal, a cultural priority, and the subject of scientific research,” said Jayme Illien, UN advisor and CEO of the Illien Global Public Benefit Corp. “During Happiness Week, and especially on the International Day of Happiness, we take time to create and act on opportunities for all of us to achieve Happiness.”

Illien helped draft UN Resolution 66/281 which proclaims March 20 as the International Day of Happiness.
