Grandmother investigated after Moline baby suffered fractured skull, bite marks

Police and the Department of Children and Family Services are looking into the suspicious death of a 4-month-old baby boy in Moline.

Police and the Department of Children and Family Services are looking into the suspicious death of a 4-month-old baby boy in Moline, Illinois.

Darien Watkins was found by first responders in his grandmother's home on North Shore Drive on March 2, 2015, after police got a 9-1-1 call for an unresponsive child.

Sources tell WQAD the baby had a fractured skull, broken ribs, and bite marks consistent with a child's mouth.

The baby was rushed by ambulance to a Moline hospital, and then airlifted to a Peoria hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll confirmed the baby's death is under criminal investigation.

"We are investigating the death of Darien Watkins. He arrived at St. Francis on March 2nd. An autopsy was performed and confirmed that Darien died of multiple injuries. I'm unable to further detail the injuries at this time due to the ongoing investigation," Ingersoll said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services tells WQAD that the agency is investigating the grandmother over allegations involving abuse and neglect in connection with the baby's death.

In addition, DCFS has suspended allowing any children into her home, which has doubled as a daycare in the past.

The Rock Island County Sheriff's Department says it is investigating the case as well.
