A Quad City group is trying to make sure good deeds don't go unnoticed. But its own good deeds deserve to get the spotlight as well.
For the past three years, QC Women in Action has mentored girls to become better women by helping them discover their potential and reach goals they may have never considered.
It only takes one person to "Pay It Forward".
"Tammy, this is from Ascentra Credit Union and Channel 8. It's 300-dollars for you to 'Pay It Forward'," says QC Women in Action mentor Yvonne Collins and she hands over the money to the group's founder, Tammy Vesey.
"You know that I love you. You always do so well."
Yvonne wrote to us to nominate Tammy for the "Pay It Forward" program funded by Ascentra Credit Union.
Yvonne says Tammy is setting an example just by being herself.
"There's nothing Tammy won't do for anybody. Even me as a grown person."
But Tammy's impact starts with the young women of the Quad Cities.
After serving almost a decade in the military, she came back to the Quad Cities to start the mentoring program for high school girls.
"And so I thought when I moved back here I thought, like, 'why not be what I wanted when I was growing up?' So I developed a mentoring program," Vesey tells us.
When we caught up with her, she was helping a group of young girls prepare for the organization's "Heroes Among Us" event honoring six Quad Citians who give back to the community. It's being held Sunday, February 22 at 6 p.m. at The Establishment, home of Comedy Sportz.
She's trying to have the girls she mentors give it their best in everything they do.
"We set a good example for the girls, teaching them and showing them there's a life beyond, you know, just living," says Vesey.
For the past three years, she's rallied other women to join her to mentor high school girls to find themselves, make good decisions in their lives, and to grow confidence.
"It's just important that the young ladies get the stuff they need to mature and grow to be successful young women," says Collins.
But that's not the only reason Yvonne nominated Tammy. Vesey has had an impact on her as well.
Mentoring knows no age limit.
"Because some of the stuff I would never have experienced if it wasn't for Tammy."
