A 24-year-old man, wanted since he vanished from an Iowa halfway house in October 2014, was charged in connection with a murder that happened during his escape.
Dustin William McDanel reportedly failed to return after a furlough from a halfway house in Ottumwa, Iowa in October 2014. McDanel was serving a sentence in connection with marijuana charges for which he was convicted in September.
McDanel was found Friday, January 23, 2015; he was hiding under a bed, at a home in Richmond Heights, Missouri according to Ottumwa Police Lt. Jason Bell.
In addition to the escape charge, McDanel was accused of shooting and killing 25-year-old Roger Wiseman Jr. on January 4. Witnesses told investigators it was McDanel who shot Wiseman, during a disagreement between the two men over which of them owned a dog.
“That ultimately led to an argument where the victim sustained several gunshot wounds,” Bell said.
McDanel was awaiting extradition proceedings to move him from Missouri back to Ottumwa to face escape and first-degree murder charges.
