Plans are in place to add 14,000 square feet to the Bettendorf Family YMCA, including two full-size gyms, and indoor track and a children’s play area.
The Bettendorf YMCA, at 3800 Tanglefoot Lane, has operated over its capacity since it opened ten years ago according to YMCA Volunteer Board Chair Doug Cropper.
The current facility will remain open during the 10-month construction process. The first phase will involve an overhaul of the east side of the building, creating a new fitness center. The plan includes remodeling much of the existing facility, in addition to adding family locker rooms, community social areas, two new gyms and an indoor track.
Most of the $4.5 million needed to fund the project comes from the Scott County Family Y’s ongoing capital campaign. The Y has raised $3.4 million, and some funding was expected to be borrowed.
“The revitalization project will also help the Y to further outreach programs for cancer support,
Parkinson’s and diabetes prevention,” said a statement from Scott County YMCA spokesman Frank Klipsch.
The project will increase the facility to 75,000 square feet.
The project was slated to be completed in the spring of 2016, Klipsch said.
