The Sharp Side on THANKFUL THURSDAY: Appreciating Routine

I do not think having a routine is dull or uninteresting. I guess for some it can be, but why?

If that picture of my dog sleeping didn’t make you want to click on this story… I don’t know WHAT will.

Welcome to The Sharp Side 2.0!

It’s the exact same content – meals, puppies, workouts, fashion, career, a rambling Angie – but under the umbrella of WQAD.com. It was tough parting ways with my personal format, but I am excited to share this blog with all of our News 8 Viewers and show a different side (ahem… The Sharp Side) of the news world and a person in that news world. Yes, I do have a life outside of WQAD. Whether it’s exciting or not… well, that’s up to you to decide!

So, today – #Thankful Thursday – I am very thankful for this opportunity to share my writing (and weird thoughts) with a bigger audience. I am excited to share with you and hear your feedback!

I am also thankful today for routine. It is very hard to get into, very easy to get out of, and it can easily be lost for days, weeks, even months at a time. (Hello Holidays.) However, I feel like I am now creating my own definition of the word.

In Webster’s Desk Dictionary (and yes, I have an actual one in my desk that I surprisingly use A LOT), routine is defined as 1. a customary or regular course of procedure. 2. habitual, unvarying, or unimaginative procedure. 3. a set of instructions directing a computer to perform a specific task 4. of, adhering to, or being routine. 5. dull or uninteresting, commonplace.

Dictionary

That 5. definition is really annoying me. I do not think having a routine is dull or uninteresting. I guess for some it can be, but why? Even if every day you – wake up at the same time, take the dog for a walk, get ready for work, work, workout, make dinner, relax on the couch, tidy up the house, go to bed – why does that have to be dull?  For me, it’s when I’m following a routine that I reflect the most. Whether that’s discovering a new street while walking Zuno, doing a workout just a little bit differently, making a dinner never made before (and when Zach decides to help, it always gets interesting)… routine is not dull, it’s dedication to a plan, a process, a procedure. It’s when I feel my healthiest and happiest.

This is not to say I don’t like it when I’m off my routine. I love sleeping in, ordering take-out, and staying out late with my friends. Those moments are more special to me though because I don’t do them every day. It makes me appreciate them – and my routine – even more.  Does that make sense?

So if you get up at the same time every day, work a 9am-5pm job (or a 1:30pm-10:30pm job or a 10pm-7am job, which is more commonplace in my line of work) – find joy in that. A custom or habit never has to be boring. It’s an opportunity to sit back, be better, work harder, change your ‘tude… and find a new routine in your old one.

Take that, Webster.
