A Canadian college student claimed her Samsung cell phone exploded and started a fire in her room.

Hope Casserly said she was awakened by a loud popping sound at about 1:30 a.m. October 22, 2014. She sat up and discovered the phone was on fire, according to a CBC News report.

Casserly posted about the incident on Facebook (see her post below), saying her Samsung Galaxy Ace II x phone was on her bedside table but not plugged in. She said the battery of her phone “exploded and caught fire and burnt my mattress and bedding.”

CBC reported Samsung answered the claim in a written statement, saying the battery in Casserly’s phone was not authorized by Samsung.

“We have provided the customer with a replacement device and will be following up with the customer to resolve the matter,” the statement said.

Casserly said the battery was the same one that came with the phone when she bought it.

Samsung also agreed to pay for the damaged mattress and bedding, the CBC report said, but Casserly said she had not received that money.

She said she did receive the replacement phone, but that she’s afraid to use it because of concern that the same thing might happen again.
