The Rock Island County Sheriff's Department is asking for your help in trying to identify a man who stole a dog from the county animal shelter.

"He just walked out with the dog," said shelter director, Sam DeYoung, who noted it was the first "dognapping" in the shelter's history.

Still photos from surveillance video taken last week are posted on the shelter's Facebook page. The person quickly accessed a holding area that is off limits to the public, and took a chihuahua mix dog.

"We were very, very busy. It happened during our clinic hours. Sometimes we seeĀ  up to 80 animals between 1-4 p.m.," she said.

It's unclear if the man had any connection to the dog and just wanted to avoid paying the fines, or is a complete stranger.

"My concern is that it wasn't their dog. It's somebody else's dog. We can always work with people, but coming and taking the dog wasn't the answer, "DeYoung said.
