Only a handful of the 50 missing zombies had been recovered after a floating haunted house sank in Lake Michigan on Halloween night.
Rough weather with strong winds and high waves forced the decision to close the Zombie Containment Haunted House barge at Navy Pier on Halloween night, Friday, October 31, 2014.
The 132-foot barge broke free of its mooring and several of the containers on it had fallen into the lake according to information from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Soon after that, the Coast Guard pulled a few large zombie mannequins out of the water according to our sister station WGN-TV.
But, the zombies continued to surface.
As divers continued to work to get the barge out of the water, they were also trying to recover about 50 zombies lost in the Halloween storm, WGN reported.
John LaFlamboy, owner of the haunted house barge, said the Halloween attraction was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and involved an “unbelievable amount of effort” from those who created the zombies.
“To watch it sink was very heartbreaking for a lot of us,” he said.
