CVS one step closer to building store at former Audubon School property

The Rock Island City Council was tasked with approving a new location for a CVS drug store.

The Rock Island City Council was tasked with approving a new location for a CVS drug store.

A CVS located on 18th Avenue was set to be demolished, as HyVee planned to build a gas station at that location.

The new drug store would be located on the old Audubon School property, just two blocks down from its 18th Avenue location.  Demolition of the school began in December 2013, but the district has struggled to close a deal with a buyer or new occupant for the site.

Before a city meeting Wednesday, November 5, 2014, City Planning and Redeveloping Administrator Ben Griffith said CVS selected the Audubon site because it was close to their old location, which would be convenient for customers, and was cohesive with their location research.

During the meeting, Rock Island residents were given an opportunity to share concerns and ask questions about the project.

“Even though you’ll be rezoning this part commercial, you’re kind of, in a way, rezoning our homes commercially,” said a neighbor concerned with the project.

The Rock Island City Council planned to discuss the matter Monday, November 10.
