Zoo visitors had the opportunity to help name the baby Colobus monkey that was born in September.

After suspecting she might be pregnant, zookeepers found the baby in the arms of its mother early Saturday, September 27, 2014.

Voting boxes were on display at the zoo in mid-October, asking zoo visitors to contribute spare change to help choose a name for the baby monkey.

On Sunday, October 26, 2014 – during day two of Boo at the Zoo – the spare change was counted and the name was announced. Zoo patrons selected Mudiwa, which means ‘beloved,’ to be the baby’s name.

The other name choices were Dakarai, which means ‘rejoice’ and Ayo, which means ‘joy.’

About $120 went into the naming of the Mudiwa. The winning name received $43.11. Dakarai was in second place with $39.21 and Ayo came in third with $37.16.

Mudiwa’s mother is 11-year-old Shirati and her father is Tuli – the adult male of the Colobus troop.
