A Quad City island has essentially been off limits for a year and a half, as the only bridge to Sylvan Island was closed by the city of Moline.  However, those looking to get back to the island may be a step closer.

The bridge to Sylvan Island has seen better days. The 112-year-old bridge was forced to close for safety issues. The rusty holes are beyond repair. A new bridge is needed and at an expensive cost. The city was able to receive a grant that will help pay for the 1.4 million dollar project.

To get the process moving forward, city council approved the first phase of the bridge Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

"It's been a long wait and it looks like it will continue to wait, but the process is moving forward," said Harris Elias, member of the group, Friend of off road cycling.

While phase one was passed by city council, the city will also have to approve phase two. The city engineer says the goal right now is to have the bridge completed by 2016.
