Bomb squad called when unexploded ordnance found at Rock Island Arsenal

Streets were closed after construction crews found an item believed to be an unexploded ordnance while they were working at the Rock Island Arsenal.

The item was discovered at about 11 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2014.

Police closed East Street, South Street, Gillespie Street and Beck Avenue and the Quad City Bomb Squad was summoned to inspect and remove the item.

The item was believed to be an unexploded ordnance but no further details were released about the item.

“It is now being properly disposed of by the Bomb Squad,” said a spokesman for the Rock Island Arsenal.  “It is currently unknown whether the suspected unexploded ordnance was inert or not.”

The bomb squad removed the item just after 1:15 p.m.
