The walls in Kris Hull Houghton's office are covered in drawings from kids she's helped who have witnessed domestic violence.

"The kids and believe it or not, if they've experienced it within the home, they're 333% more likely to actually end up in an abusive relationship themselves," she said.

Stuffed letters spell out "Hope" on her door.

"It's probably because its the biggest thing sometimes that they're lacking or that they need," said Hull Houghton.

As Program and Services Manager at Christian Cares Domestic Violence Shelter,

"It takes a lot of courage to leave and the average takes about seven times and often times, it's too late. I've had to unfortunately, go to two funerals in my career since I've worked with survivors and I don't want to go to another one," she said.

Which is why the NFL's handling of video of Ray Rice dragging his unconscious fiancee had many upset; the running back's punishment was a two game suspension.

"If you were able to kind of step up right away and say this is not acceptable, we do not condone this," said Hull Houghton.

Monday, new video showing Rice hitting his now wife, led the Baltimore Ravens to cut him from the team and the NFL Commissioner to suspend him indefinitely.

"I mean they turned around and did the right thing but after how long?" she said.

Talk of the incident and domestic violence has been all over the internet and TV.

"The fact that we're even talking about it, is progress because a lot of times individuals are so shamed into that silence, so shamed that it's their fault," said Hull Houghton.

One positive in addressing an issue,

"Domestic violence is an issue that's perpetuated by silence, it really is. It is swept under the rug, it is put away, it is you know, hidden by shame," she said.

A shame Kris is working to heal, one survivor at a time.

"I will never forget what one of my clients said, she said 'He may have broke both my cheek bones, and gave me a black eye, but those scars heal, it is what is on the inside that doesn't, that takes time.'"
