Two people escaped when fire consumed the front porch of a home under renovation in Muscatine, Iowa.

The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2014, at a home in the 500 block of East 9th Street.

Firefighters arrived to find the front porch engulfed in fire.   Except for hot spots, the fire was under control in about five minutes.

Crews continued to extinguish hot spots for another hour.

Fire damaged the front porch, and there was minor fire and smoke damage to the inside of the home.

The home was under renovation and “smoke detector operation was not optimal,” according to Assistant Fire Chief Mike Hartman.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
