A man faces criminal charges after he allegedly used a baseball bat as a weapon during a fight with another man.

Jose Antonio Tapia Jr., 27, was involved in an altercation in the front yard of a home in the 400 block of Peachtree Street in Muscatine, Iowa on Friday, August 8, 2014.

Michael Newman, 39, was hospitalized for injuries he suffered during the altercation.

Criminal complaints alleged Tapia “intended to cause the victim’s death” when he struck Newman with a baseball bat, according to Muscatine County Attorney Alan Ostergren.

Tapia was in jail in lieu of $50,000 bond after he was arrested on unrelated drug charges Monday, August 11, Ostergren said.

Tapia was charged Wednesday, August 13, with felony attempt to commit murder and felony willful injury.  He was held without bond in the Muscatine County Jail.
