Golfers bugged by bugs during play at John Deere Classic

Players couldn’t stop swatting and slapping during the first round of play Thursday, July 10, 2014.

Following recent rains and flooding, an apparent insect invasion was the hot topic of conversation on the first day of tournament play at the John Deere Classic.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water; gnats prefer moving water.  With ample sources of both - thanks to heavy recent rain and flooding - the bugs are enough to drive everyone a little buggy.

Players couldn't stop swatting and slapping during the first round of play Thursday, July 10, 2014.

That left golfers and spectators scrambling for relief that natives of the Quad Cities area know all too well.   Cover as much skin as possible, use repellant, and many locals swear by remedies such as Absorbine Jr., vanilla (no corn syrup on the label, please) and Bug Soother (made by a company in Columbus Junction).
