Homeowners are being warned of a scam. Police say unsought contractors offer to blacktop your driveway and end up asking for payment that is “much higher” than anticipated after the work is complete.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office said several homeowners have reported being contacted by people seeking work, offering to black top their driveway and claiming to have leftover materials from a previous job. After the work is done, residents who hired these people say the fee is much higher than initially set.

Police say residents should not enter into an agreement like this without checking business backgrounds or references.

If you feel a person hired to do work is suspicious or if you feel pressured to accept work from an unsolicited person, police say you should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 309-734-8383.
