The 25th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure is Saturday, June 14, 2014. Up to 8,000 people are expected to run the streets of Moline. Downtown businesses are also helping the cause by participating in the first ever After Party for the Cure.
Taped on mirrors, windows, and doors is the symbol of a cancer so many know all to well.
"We all have the pink ribbons in our windows," said Makayla Mesmer, Events Coordinator at Brix and Barrel House.
"I think none of us have not been touched by breast cancer," said Beth Lagomarcino.
The pink ribbons are in at least a dozen downtown Moline businesses preparing for Saturday's race.
"Just to get involved with our community, get all of the businesses together for a common cause," said Mesmer.
"We'll be donating part of the proceeds of what we take in Saturday morning," said Lagomarcino.
"We're hoping to raise awareness for the cancer and donations from the shop sales that day will go toward finding a cure for it," said Charles Lahl of Dead Poet's Espresso.
"We also are featuring 50 cents off our hot fudge sundae, but if they're in with their bib, they'll get a dollar off," said Lagomarcino.
It's the first ever After Party for the Cure.
"They will be providing specials and discounts to those coming in wearing a race bib or race t-shirt tomorrow, many of them are opening early and also donating proceeds back to us," said Christina McNamara, Marketing and Development Director of Komen Quad Cities.
- Barrel House Moline will be open Saturday at 9:00 a.m. They will offer a limited breakfast menu and full lunch menu.
- Legends Corner Bar and Grille will open Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Their deal includes buying 8 wings and getting 4 free. They will also be offering a 10% discount on all sales.
- Watermark Corners Gift and Stationary Boutique is offering 10% merchandise. Those that present their race bibs will receive 20% off.
- Lagomarcino's will open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. They will be serving ice cream outside and have Race for the Cure oreos for sale.
- Isabel Bloom Handcrafted Sculpture will open at 8:30 a.m. and sculptures will be 10% off.
- Pub 1848 will be open at 9:00 a.m. They will have cupcakes and pizza.
- River House will open their outside bar at 9:00 a.m. and will open for lunch at 11:00 a.m.
- Dead Poet's Espresso will open at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. They will have coffee and breakfast.
- John Deere Store will open at 8:00 a.m. and is offering 25% off merchandise.
- Two Rivers Massage will open at 9:30 a.m. and will have $10 off a one-hour Swedish Massage.
- Bier stube opens at 8:00 a.m. and is offering 15% off for those that wear their race bib or t-shirt.
A perk for the race and the participating businesses.
"We're hoping it draws in a few customers that didn't know we were here and then we can point them out to different areas if they're looking for a different kind of shop, we can hopefully send them to that one too," said Lahl.
"Hopefully it will be a good turnout, there's a lot of money coming in and then they have a lot of money to spend," said Dieter Rebitzer, owner of Bier stube in Moline.
There will also be bands playing behind Pub 1848 and on the plaza next to River House in Moline.
