Proposal could change the way you receive mail

A House committee has approved a proposal that would end door-to-door mail delivery along routes traditionally walked by postal carriers.

Wednesday, a House committee approved a proposal that would end door-to-door mail delivery, impacting 15 million Americans.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee approved the measure on an 18-13 vote.

Currently, the U.S. Postal Service spends $380 annually for every door delivery address compared with $240 for curbside and $170 for communal boxes.

Democrats oppose the plan; while Republican Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., says switching to communal or curbside delivery would save the U.S. Postal Service $2 billion annually.

In Rock Island, the neighborhood near the intersection of Blackhawk Road and 30th street use communal mailboxes.

"I think they are convenient," said A.J. Clay, who lives in the housing addition. "If it's going to save money, I think every neighborhood should use the communal boxes."

Others oppose the plan, arguing urban areas may not have the space to implement a curbside or communal mail system.

If passed and signed by the President, the U.S Postal Service would have a decade to make the transition.
