A 33-year-old soldier, who grew up in Iowa, died while serving in Afghanistan.

Chief Warrant Officer Deric Rasmussen of Oceanside, California died May 11, 2014 according to the Department of Defense. Rasmussen died in a non-combat incident, the DOD said.

Rasmussen was assigned to the Company C, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Rasmussen grew up in Storm Lake and still has family there, according to the Omaha World-Herald. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1999, and attended Iowa State University for a year before joining the military according to the Des Moines Register.

Rasmussen served in the Marines from 2000 to 2003, and then he joined the Army. Rasmussen deployed with his unit to Mazar-I Sharif, Afghanistan in January 2014.

Rasmussen was survived by his parents and other family members, including his wife and three children.
