The first woman ever hired by the Rock Island, Illinois Fire Department has retired.

Emergency Medical Services Coordinator Lieutenant Suzanne Vallejo served for more than 20 years with the department.

Vallejo joined the Rock Island Fire Department January 17, 1994.  She was promoted to lieutenant in 2006.

“Lieutenant Vallejo’s experience and dedication will be missed,” said Rock Island Fire Chief James Fobert, “and I wish her the best in retirement.”

Vallejo’s retirement was effective April 4, 2014.
