Thieves unfazed by locks and police in Rock Island burglaries

A string of break-ins left several Rock Island garages exposed in the early morning hours on Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

Several of the garages on the 2500 block of 29th Avenue were locked, including one owned by a Rock Island Police officer, who was on duty at the time. Thieves pried their way in with a crow bar and neighbors reported several items missing.

Jerry Nesbitt's garage was broken into and said it isn't the first time this has happened.

"We've had a couple bicycles stolen out of our garages over the years. My son had his car parked outside and had his stereo taken out of his car," Nesbitt said.

Neighboring streets were also hit, including the 2500 block of 22 1/2 Ave.

"Even though we're in a good part of Rock Island, we're not that safe. It does make you quite concerned," Nesbitt said.

Police have not said if they have any suspects.
