Ad seen as smart by some, sacreligious by others

Emailed ads for a Seattle-based burger restaurant are, at the very least, generating some buzz about the place.

Lunchbox Laboratory sent the ad to their 13,000 deals subscribers. The email ad, promoting an Easter Sunday buy-one-get-one-free offer for their ‘Burger of the Gods,” features an image of Jesus with what appears to be a burger in one hand and a marijuana cigarette in the other.

“I wanted you to look at Jesus smoking a blunt, eating a hamburger and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to tell my friend,” Lunchbox Laboratory owner John Schmidt told our sister station Q13Fox.

A text bubble pointed to Jesus’ mouth reads, “When I get back, all I want is the Burger of the Gods.”

One look at their website might tell you the ad is pretty consistent with their irreverent style.

While some commended Schmidt’s marketing ingenuity, others complained that the ad is offensive.

“When my business is struggling to pay my bills, I’m not going to go to my pastor,” Schmidt said. “I am trying to get people excited about this advertising.”

“I’m not your moral compass,” Schmidt said. “We’re just trying to sell sandwiches. If you’re looking to me for moral direction you’re probably misguided.”
