Davenport is ranked fourth in the U.S. for cities with the fastest growing gender pay gap, according to a recent report.

Between 2007 and 2012, the gender pay gap in Davenport rose by more than 30 percent. That just one of several startling statistics.

By age 65, the average working women will have lost $431,000 due to the gender pay gap, according to U.S. Census data.

"It's detrimental to women, it's not good for families, and it's economically terrible for the community," said Colleen Rafferty, Co-Executive Director of Women's Connection.

Colleen has been raising awareness of the gender pay gap for years. With the U.S. economy relying on women consumers, Colleen says women aren't receiving their fair share.

"Women nationwide and regionally, make up 83 percent of consumer buying decision," Colleen said.

And Judy Morrell, Director of Davenport Civil Rights Commission, agrees.

"Caucasian women make 77 cents to every dollar a male makes. If your an African American women, you earn 68.9 cents to every dollar," Judy said.

Judy added Hispanic women make a dismal 59 cents for every dollar.

And with the data showing the gender pay gap continuing to rise, both Colleen and Judy agree that education must be a priority.

"It's an awareness issue that people need to be informed of," Colleen said.

Tuesday is National Equal Pay Day and President Obama is expected to take executive action on equal pay rules.
