As springtime draws near, boaters will be enjoying some free time on area rivers. To ensure a safe boating season, free safety classes were offered.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scheduled five boating safety education classes in March, April, and May.

Classes were set to run from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on March 15, March 29, April 12, April 26, and May 17. After one 8-hour class and an exam, participants would be issued an Illinois DNR Boat Safety certification, honored both in Iowa and Illinois. Anyone over age 12 is eligible for certification.

The classes were recommended to any new boaters, families planning weekend outings, or even expert boaters looking to get a refresher course.

The course is held at the Mississippi River Project Office at Locks and Dam 14 in Pleasant Valley. Pre-registration is required, call 309-794-5338.
