A community gathered at a Davenport bar to honor a lost friend and raise money for melanoma research.

Saturday, March 8, 2014 was the 3rd annual Tips for Tad event at Pint’s Bar.

According to the event Facebook page, tips collected from 1 - 4 p.m. were donated to the University of Iowa Melanoma Research Fund.

In 2012, Tad Agnew, a local Iowa State fan, passed away after a two year battle with melanoma. Friends and family began the tradition by gathering at one of his favorite places on what would have been Tad’s birthday in 2012.

Tad’s loved ones say it’s great to see so many people come out to support the cause.

“Our whole community comes together for this event and it’s just an awesome thing in honor of a great guy,” said bartender Johnna Chesney.

“I think it says a lot about my son, Tad,” said Tad’s father, Chris Agnew. “I’m so proud of him and it also means a lot for folks that are struggling with melanoma.”

In Tad’s memory, patrons watched an Iowa State Cyclones game, held a silent auction that included a basketball and a football signed by Iowa State’s head coaches.

Sunday, March 9 would have been Tad’s 36th birthday.
