Q.C. businesses generate 160,000 meals during food drive competition

Quad City businesses competed to collect thousands of pounds of food for a local food bank.

After a successful hunger drive among local students, the 2014 Student Hunger Drive Corporate Challenge began. Throughout the challenge, 34 businesses with more than 6,000 employees collected food and money for the River Bend Foodbank.

The numbers released Wednesday, March 5 showed that area businesses collected 167,986.90 pounds of food for the Davenport foodbank.

“These efforts included a generous $15,000 match from the John Deere Foundation,” said Denise Hester, Executive Director of the Quad Cities Student Hunger Drive. “Approximately 160,000 meals will be provided to those in need through the Student Hunger Drive Corporate Challenge.”

The division winners are as follows:

Division A – 851+ employees

  1. ALCOA – 36.5 pounds per employee (*Largest donation in pounds – 31,060.4 pounds)
  2. APAC Customer Service

 

Division B – 151-850 employees

  1. Quad City Times – 92.71 pounds per employee
  2. Walgreens – 65.57 pounds per employee
  3. Mel Foster Company – 37.25 pounds per employee

 

Division C – 51-150 employees

  1. Estes Constructon – 100.14 pounds per employee (*Also winner of 2014 Student Hunger Drive Corporate Challenge Best New Business)
  2. RIA Federal Credit Union – 66.15 pounds per employee
  3. American Bank & Trust – 21.38 pounds per employee

 

Division D – 1-50 employees

  1. Ryan Companies US, Inc. – 454.55 pounds per employee (*Overall greatest donation based on pounds of food per employee)
  2. B&B Masonry – 300 pounds per employee
  3. Treiber Construction – 289.14 pounds per employee

*The United Way of the Quad Cities won the Student Hunger Drive Corporate Challenge Creative Event Award.

During the 28th Annual Student Hunger Drive at the end of 2013, 521,115 pounds of food were collected.
