The Davenport Community School Board will vote on the 2014-2015 start date for students on Monday, February 24th, 2014.
In Iowa, state law says that students shouldn’t start school until the week that includes September 1st, but every year a majority of school districts get out of it by requesting waivers. The Davenport School Board will be doing that again for 2014-2015 because they want to start the school year on Thursday, August 14th, 2014.
Students started going to class in Davenport on August 12th of 2013 for the 2013-2014 school year. The district likes starting earlier because it gives students more time to take finals, if they have a lot of snow days. Parents we talked to Monday say school should start about one week later.
"Probably a week closer to the 20th of August would be better," Davenport resident Bob Wayt said. "It gives the kids a little more time for summer vacation."
The Moline School District started during the same week that Davenport Community Schools did for 2013-2014. The Davenport School Board meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Achievement Service Center.
